OpenAI Will Flip
On ChatGPT Ad
Auto-Rewrites October 30
— Advertisers Get
Nine Days To
Opt Out

A Monday email from OpenAI tells self-serve advertisers that creative enhancements — AI-generated headlines, descriptions, translations, image resizes, and destination-URL swaps — will run without per-version approval starting Friday, October 30. The toggle is on by default.

OpenAI emailed its self-serve ChatGPT advertisers on Monday to tell them that “creative enhancements” will flip on by default on October 30, giving the industry nine days to opt out of a setting that lets the platform rewrite headlines, descriptions, image sizes, destination URLs, and language translations without per-version approval. Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz, who received the email and published a screenshot showing the toggle already on in account settings, quoted OpenAI’s own framing: “these ads can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version,” designed to “make your ads more relevant to the conversation and/or user interests.”

Translated out of ad-platform register, the ad a ChatGPT user sees may bear only incidental resemblance to the one the advertiser wrote. PPC Land put it more directly in its Tuesday summary: “the ad that a ChatGPT user sees may never have been read by the advertiser that paid for it.”

Reaction from the paid-search community was immediate and skeptical. Melissa Mackey posted on X that her team had already paused a ChatGPT ads test “due to poor lead quality and now I’m glad we did.” Anthony Higman, in a separate post captured in the same report, warned: “If An Ad Platform Is Framing Something As ‘Less Work For You’”, the implied second half of that sentence being familiar to anyone who watched Google’s broad-match defaults migrate from option to presumption over the last decade.

The structural read is that this is the third ChatGPT ads change in roughly three weeks. OpenAI rolled out visual ads inside image generation in early October, priced per Ad Age at roughly $300,000 minimums and $40 CPMs; shipped ChatGPT ads’ CRM-targeting launch and its $25,000 user floor that locks out most small advertisers; and completed the hire of the founders behind the Max autonomous ad agent in mid-October. The direction is unambiguous. Human creative judgment is being quietly abstracted away from a channel pointed at ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users and roughly 2.5 billion daily prompts, a surface Digiday described on October 5 as still carrying only a single placement format and unresolved measurement.

For a five-to-thirty-person team running ChatGPT ads, the practical window is tight. The toggle lives in Ads Manager account settings. Campaign-level choices override account defaults, and existing opt-outs are preserved. October 29 is the last day to decide before OpenAI decides for everyone else.
