OpenAI Ads hires
Notch founders, the
team that built
an autonomous ad
agent for small
businesses

Vinay and Aman Jain, who launched Max less than a month ago as a hands-off performance marketer for owner-operated brands, say they are joining the OpenAI Ads team — a signal about who ChatGPT's self-serve ad platform is being built for.

Vinay and Aman Jain, the brothers who launched Notch’s autonomous ad agent Max on September 23, confirmed on October 14 that they’re joining OpenAI’s advertising team. Vinay posted the news on X; both founders announced it on LinkedIn. No deal terms, no OpenAI statement, no confirmation of whether this is a formal acquisition or a straight team hire has surfaced.

The timing is the story. Max went public less than a month before the move. In that window, Notch said it had generated more than 85,000 live advertisements for hundreds of businesses, and claimed a 30% reduction in customer acquisition cost for the direct-to-consumer brand Scentless over two months. That’s a single-brand vendor result and deserves to be read as one. But the thing OpenAI is apparently buying isn’t the metric. It’s the posture.

Max is marketed as a “Level 4 autonomous performance marketer.” It wakes up inside a brand’s Shopify, Meta, and TikTok stack, studies competitors, produces creative, and launches campaigns without step-by-step prompting from the owner. The founders know this surface because they built it. Vinay spent eight years at Meta on the core mobile advertising engine, including Lead Ads. Aman was tech lead on Twitter’s Direct Response Ads team, the first backend engineer on Instagram Live, and founding tech lead for the WhatsApp Business API. Between them, they wrote large pieces of the plumbing that small-business paid acquisition currently runs on.

That matters because of where OpenAI’s ad business already is. BestMediaInfo frames the advertising unit as having crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. The Sponsored Agents work we reported in late September turned ChatGPT ads into a sales conversation rather than a placement. The visual-ads rollout we covered last week put display units alongside image-generation results and brought in AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, and Northbeam as measurement partners. Adweek has OpenAI hiring an Agency Partner on Ads Solutions to lock in holding-company media plans.

Read as a sequence, those moves describe two parallel bets: one aimed at agencies and the holding companies, and one aimed at owner-operators who can’t afford agencies and don’t want to run a dashboard. Hiring the Notch team is a tell about which of those bets the self-serve side is being built around. The last time a dominant ads platform absorbed the people who had just solved its hardest small-business problem was Google’s acquisition of Urchin in 2005, which became Analytics and reshaped what free tooling an ad buyer expected from the house. The posting cycle around this hire will treat it as a talent story. It’s a product-roadmap story wearing a LinkedIn announcement.
