Google Pushes Links
Higher in AI
Mode, Tests 'Official
Pages' Slot at
Top

A five-part update to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15 lifted inline links earlier in answers and opened a test of a dedicated section for the one or two authoritative pages a task needs — reshaping which small-business pages get cited.

Google announced five changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, and the one that matters most to small businesses is the quietest: a test of a dedicated section at the top of some answers reserved for one or two “official pages” the AI judges authoritative for the task.

Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management for Search, headlined the company’s Keyword post “More ways to connect with the web from Search.” Her framing of the new slot was blunt: “Sometimes, there are only one or two official places on the web to complete a specific task or get the exact info you need.” Translated: a pricing page, a booking page, a services page can now be the citation an AI answer hands a buyer before that buyer ever visits a site directly.

The other headline change is that inline links are appearing “higher up in responses more frequently,” with what Google calls “continued and substantial increases” in link presence. No numbers accompanied either claim. PPC Land noted on October 18 that Google provided no start date, no example query types, and no criteria for what qualifies as “official.”

The one adoption figure Google did share concerns Preferred Sources, where user selections have grown “by more than 7x since the start of the year.” That stat sits awkwardly next to prior milestones PPC Land flagged, nearly 90,000 unique sources selected by December 2025, more than 600,000 by August 2026, because those earlier counts measured sources, not users. The 7x can’t be reconciled with them.

Then there’s the measurement problem. BetaNews points out Search Console still shows no click metrics for AI features. Relevant Audience, citing Search Engine Journal, notes that Search Console assigns every link inside an AI Overview the single position of the Overview itself, so a higher-placed inline citation is invisible in a site owner’s own reporting. Google told Search Engine Roundtable it’ll “introduce additional metrics over time,” without a date.

The backdrop is unforgiving. A randomized study cited by PPC Land found AI Overviews cut outbound clicks by 39.8%. Ahrefs put top-ranking CTR reduction at 58% as of February 2026. Alongside how AI Mode ads became a real customer channel and the arrival of Google’s universal cart, the center of discovery is moving inside the answer. Being the cited page is the new ranking.

Which is a content problem, not a tooling problem, and most owners don’t have the hours. The NY Fed finding that only one in three small businesses using AI has seen sales grow suggests why.

This is the content-strategy problem LemonLime targets: it studies the company, industry, and existing content, decides which buyer-task queries matter, and prepares the finished page copy and content a small business would need to be the source an AI answer cites, without the owner having to learn generative-engine optimization.

Google kept the metrics opaque and moved the slot anyway.
