Google began rolling out Universal Cart across U.S. Search and the Gemini app today, inserting a persistent cross-retailer shopping cart into the two surfaces where product discovery now begins. The feature runs on a new Universal Commerce Protocol and draws from what Google calls “the 60+ billion continually refreshed product listings in Google’s Shopping Graph” to save items, trigger price-drop and back-in-stock alerts, surface promo codes, and recommend which stored card to use via Google Wallet data.
Suresh Ganapathy, Senior Director of Product Management for Consumer Shopping at Google, framed the cart as “an intelligent shopping cart and your new hub for shopping on Google.” The framing is accurate in a way merchants should sit with. Items get saved, tracked, and compared inside Google before any click reaches the retailer.
Launch partners include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, plus a wide base of Shopify stores. Checkout runs through Google Pay or hands off to the merchant’s own cart, and in both cases Google says the retailer “will remain the seller of record.” Per TechCrunch, the cart “can send notifications when a saved product’s price drops or when an out-of-stock item becomes available again.”
The on-ramp for Shopify sellers has already happened. PPC Land reports that Shopify stores were matched to Merchant Center accounts and switched on for native checkout by default starting September 18, with notification emails going out September 22. Opt-out was the only exit.
What Google hasn’t disclosed matters as much as what it shipped. PPC Land notes the company hasn’t explained how in-cart promo codes are sourced, how competing merchants selling the same SKU are ranked inside the cart, what merchants pay for Google Pay transactions, or whether abandoned-cart signals ever reach the retailer. The YouTube and Gmail integrations previewed at I/O in May are also absent.
For a small B2C retailer, the practical reading is narrow and urgent. Whether a price-drop alert fires on your SKU, or a competitor’s, is now a direct function of Merchant Center feed accuracy and UCP eligibility. Eight to ten weeks of holiday traffic will route through this cart before anyone sees the first set of ranking postmortems. Audit the feed against live pricing, confirm UCP status, and check how products surface inside AI Mode and Gemini conversations now, not after Cyber Monday.
The structural picture is consistent with what we’ve covered recently: AI Mode ads becoming a real customer channel, loyalty Customer Match landing inside AI Mode with a lowered list minimum, and Algolia’s AI search plug for Shopify B2B. Each move pulls more of the pre-purchase funnel upstream, into the model and the index. Universal Cart is the first one that pulls the cart itself.
