A new exact- and phrase-match test, a Direct Offer pilot, and a 50,000-keyword study of what's live show AI Mode has crossed from experiment to operating ad surface — and existing campaigns may already be in.

Google has quietly started serving text ads from traditional Search campaigns inside AI Mode, a shift that collapses the fence the company spent most of this year building between its conversational surface and its legacy auction. Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed to Search Engine Land that exact and phrase match keywords are now eligible to appear in AI Mode responses when there’s “explicit and direct user intent.” She called it a “small experiment.” The framing is characteristically modest, and characteristically misleading about scale.

The behavior was first spotted by AdSquire founder Anthony Higman, who said he reproduced it across multiple campaigns. Until now, Google had positioned AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping, and Performance Max as the on-ramps to AI Mode placements, a line it reiterated at Google Marketing Live 2026. That script is no longer operative. Advertisers who never opted into AI Max, and whose campaigns weren’t otherwise migrated into AI Max, may already be serving inside the surface without knowing.

The scale question is answered, at least partially, by SE Ranking, which analyzed 50,032 commercial keywords across 20 niches on June 30, 2026. Text ads appeared on 14,733 of them, or 29.45%. Nearly one in three commercial queries now carries paid inventory inside AI Mode. The density tracks CPC almost linearly: 24.33% for sub-$2 keywords, 32.45% in the $2–$10 band, and 53.56% at $10 and above. Niche variance is wider still. Pets surfaced ads on 72.38% of queries; Healthcare on 2.64%. Where ads do appear, 71.1% of placements show two competing items side by side.

Four formats are live in testing or pilot: the exact/phrase match text ads, Direct Offer, Conversational Discovery ads, and Highlighted Answers. AI Max for Shopping remains in beta. Gemini supplies the answer layer; the ad slot sits adjacent to it.

Two caveats deserve equal weight to the headline number. Advertisers still have limited ability to isolate AI Mode performance inside Google Ads reporting, which means the surface is monetizing before it’s measurable. And for roughly 88% of ad keywords, SE Ranking found the paying advertiser’s domain wasn’t among the sources AI Mode cited in its answer. The ad slot and the citation have been decoupled. Buying attention is one transaction; being named as a source is another, governed by signals Google hasn’t disclosed and that overlap with the mechanics behind loyalty and Customer Match landing inside AI Mode.

For a 5-to-30-person operator, the practical audit is narrow. Pull commercial keywords, flag anything above the $10 CPC threshold, cross-reference against SE Ranking’s niche density, and decide whether a Direct Offer asset is worth piloting against shoppers who are already most of the way through a decision. The surface has stopped being a roadmap item. It’s an auction, running now.
