On October 20, OpenAI emailed self-serve ChatGPT advertisers to tell them the platform will begin rewriting their ads automatically, by default, within ten days. The feature is called creative enhancements, and OpenAI can’t quite decide when it begins. The email says October 30. The help page, as PPC Land observed when it checked on October 21, says October 29. OpenAI hasn’t publicly reconciled the two dates.
What the switch covers is broader than the “rewrite headlines” framing implies. Under default settings, ChatGPT may generate new ad text, resize images, change the destination URL a click sends a user to, and translate copy into other languages. The email, screenshotted and published by Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable, tells advertisers the system “may create new or updated text to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests.” OpenAI’s help page is blunter about the trade-off: it “does not provide a preview of every variation.” MediaPost’s reading is that advertisers “will give up the ability to preview personalized variations under default settings.”
The help page is also silent on how a replacement landing page is chosen, whether it has to live on the same domain as the advertiser’s original URL, and whether advertisers can mark specific pages off-limits. PPC Land flagged all three gaps.
The scale makes the ambiguity load-bearing. OpenAI said on October 21 that ChatGPT ads are now sold in 89 countries and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch. This is the third rollout in a month that quietly shifts control away from the advertiser: visual ads inside ChatGPT image generation landed October 8, and the CRM-targeting rollout with a $25,000 user floor landed days earlier. The pattern is coherent: more surface, more automation, less preview.
Opt-out exists but it’s bundled. MediaPost reports the path runs Ads Manager → Manage Settings → toggle off Text Customization/Creative Enhancements. One switch for all four behaviors. The email notes advertisers can change the setting “at any time.”
Practitioner reaction hasn’t been warm. Melissa Mackey posted on X that her team had already paused a ChatGPT ads test “due to poor lead quality,” a datapoint Search Engine Roundtable surfaced alongside the email. AdExchanger called the Halloween-adjacent timing “spooky” and the advance notice “about the bare minimum.”
Preview-free ad rewriting at six-figure advertiser scale isn’t an experiment anymore. It’s the default, backdated into existing campaigns, with a toggle that’s one click away and, for most accounts, isn’t going to get clicked.
