On October 20, OpenAI emailed self-serve ChatGPT advertisers to tell them that “creative enhancements” will be switched on by default for every new and existing campaign at the end of this month. The email names Friday, October 30 as the start date; the help article it links to lists Thursday, October 29, as PPC Land confirmed on October 21. Either way, advertisers who do nothing by this week will begin running ads they’ve never read.
The feature covers four categories under a single account-level toggle. OpenAI’s system may generate “new or updated text to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests,” translate copy (“OpenAI may translate your ad text into another language”), resize images so they’re “resized to fit the ad format,” and swap destination URLs that are “optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website.” There’s no per-category control. The help page itself concedes that “the experience does not provide a preview of every variation,” and reporting doesn’t separate enhanced versions from the original creative.
For a small business running paid ChatGPT traffic, the destination-URL rewrite is the one to think about first. A URL the advertiser never typed can bypass a conversion tag, land on an older product page, or break the funnel a campaign was tuned against. OpenAI publishes no selection logic for the swap and no exclusion capability. In regulated categories, a rewritten headline that restates an offer in the system’s own words becomes the advertiser’s compliance problem, not OpenAI’s.
Scale makes the default consequential. OpenAI said on October 21 that ChatGPT ads are now sold in 89 countries and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch, built on an Ads Manager opened to all US businesses in May and now extending its ad surface across image generation. The Ads Manager interface still carries a “Beta” label.
Practitioner reaction was immediate. “Yikes. We ended up pausing our ChatGPT ads test due to poor lead quality and now I’m glad we did. Not cool.”, Melissa Mackey posted on X, in reactions collected by Search Engine Roundtable, where Barry Schwartz first published the email and a screenshot showing the toggle already flipped on in his account. Anthony Higman accused OpenAI of framing the change as time-saving while quietly expanding where ads serve. AdExchanger called the Halloween-adjacent timing “spooky” and the single toggle “about the bare minimum.”
The opt-out path, per MediaPost, is Ads Manager, Manage Settings, toggle off Text Customization / Creative Enhancements. Existing opt-outs carry over, and campaign-level settings override the account default, which is the lever conversion-tag-dependent campaigns should use before Thursday. The structural read is simpler: a Beta ad product with over 100,000 advertisers just made autonomous creative rewrites the opt-out, not the opt-in, and gave the market nine days to notice.
