On October 20, OpenAI emailed advertisers to say it’ll flip a feature called “creative enhancements” on by default for every self-serve ChatGPT ad campaign at the end of the month. Advertisers have roughly a week to opt out, and even that deadline is contested: the email obtained by Search Engine Roundtable gives October 30, while OpenAI’s own help page lists October 29. PPC Land, which checked the page on October 21, noted it had been updated within the previous twelve hours. OpenAI hasn’t explained the discrepancy, which means the safe assumption is the earlier date.
Once the switch flips, four things can change inside a running campaign without per-version advertiser approval: headlines and descriptions can be rewritten “to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests,” ad text can be translated, images can be resized, and destination URLs can be swapped for one “optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website.” That language is OpenAI’s, lifted from its own documentation. The product name for all of this is “creative enhancements.”
There’s one toggle in Ads Manager Settings governing all four behaviors. No per-element control. And per PPC Land, OpenAI’s help page doesn’t describe reporting that separates enhanced versions from the original creative, so advertisers won’t be able to tell which variant a user actually saw. Existing account- and campaign-level opt-outs are preserved, and campaign-specific settings override the account default, a detail worth checking before Thursday.
AdExchanger ran its roundup item under the headline “OpenAI Foists Creative ‘Enhancements’ On Advertisers,” describing the change as “potentially removing human oversight from creative decisions.” Paid-search practitioners responded in kind. “Yikes. We ended up pausing our ChatGPT ads test due to poor lead quality and now I’m glad we did. Not cool,” Melissa Mackey posted on X the same day the email went out.
The context is scale. OpenAI says ChatGPT ads are now sold in 89 countries, with more than 100,000 advertisers having run campaigns since launch. The Ads Manager that opened to all U.S. businesses in May and the visual ad formats OpenAI rolled into ChatGPT image generation earlier this month have made this a real self-serve channel. Defaulting rewrites on is how a self-serve ad product graduates into something more like a programmatic one: the advertiser supplies raw material, the platform decides what runs.
It’s the familiar arc. Google and Meta made the same move years ago, and the smaller the advertiser, the less recourse they’ve when the system decides their landing page isn’t the right one.
