OpenAI opens ChatGPT
ads to HubSpot
and Shopify, tests
brand-run 'Sponsored Agents'
inside the chat

The Sept. 16 rollout puts a self-serve ChatGPT ad channel inside the CRM and storefront tools small businesses already run — and pilots an ad format that opens a labeled conversation with a brand's own agent.

OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents on Sept. 16 and, the same day, wired ChatGPT Ads directly into HubSpot and Shopify. The two moves fit together: one turns the ad unit itself into a conversation with a brand’s own agent, and the other puts the buying interface where small businesses already live.

Sponsored Agents work like this. A user clicks a relevant ad inside ChatGPT and, instead of being kicked to a landing page, opens a labeled conversation with the advertiser’s agent, asks follow-up questions, and eventually clicks through to the brand site. OpenAI says the exchange is walled off from ChatGPT’s independent answers and from the user’s original session. The Register describes an example from OpenAI’s announcement video in which a recipe request is routed into a subscription meal-kit agent offering options for the fastest weeknight kit. The pilot is limited to select U.S. advertisers.

The distribution story is broader. As of Sept. 16, per Unite.AI, HubSpot customers can connect a ChatGPT Ads account and build, monitor, and follow up on ads without leaving HubSpot. U.S. Shopify merchants can install a free ChatGPT Ads app, listed Sept. 3 in the Shopify App Store, that syncs inventory, builds ads from the catalog, and reports back through a Shopify pixel. OpenAI says the Shopify app expands to other ChatGPT Ads markets starting Sept. 23. HubSpot and OpenAI have layered on an “AI Growth Bundle” for new accounts opened by Sept. 30: HubSpot Starter and credits at up to 65% off for a year, buy-one-get-one on ChatGPT Business seats, and a $750 match on ChatGPT Ads spend.

The scale context matters. Digiday reported on Aug. 31, per PPC Land, that ChatGPT advertising had moved from its Feb. 9 launch to roughly $83 million in monthly revenue, a $1 billion annualized run rate, in under 200 days. PPC Land notes the figure is derived from self-reported and vendor-panel estimates and hasn’t been independently verified.

What OpenAI hasn’t disclosed, per PPC Land, is Sponsored Agents pricing, what advertisers actually receive from the transcript, or how outcomes get measured beyond the initial click. That’s a meaningful gap for anyone changing the small-brand economics of the channel, and it lands alongside AI-native storefront integrations like Gemini’s Flipkart buy button and the HubSpot Unbound survey of marketers this month suggesting AI assistants become customers’ primary discovery layer.

For an owner without bandwidth to research a new ad surface, draft an agent’s pitch script, and monitor performance, LemonLime, a done-for-you sales and marketing service for small businesses, is built to prepare that kind of work proactively, studying the company and its competitive landscape and surfacing customer-growth opportunities, emerging paid channels included, without the owner having to prompt it.

The ad unit is no longer a click. It’s a pitch that has to hold its own inside a chat.
