OpenAI began testing a Sponsored Agents ad unit on September 16 and, on the same news cycle, shipped free native apps that let advertisers run ChatGPT campaigns directly from Shopify and HubSpot. Sponsored Agents opens a labeled, business-sponsored dialogue after the click, which OpenAI says “is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation.” Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe’s, and VistaPrint are named as early advertisers on ChatGPT Ads.
The context matters more than the format. ChatGPT Ads has gone from pilot to a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, roughly $83 million a month, since the February 9 launch. Similarweb estimated on August 17 that 26% of responses shown to Free and Go users carried a sponsored placement. Ads reached 31 European markets on August 24 and India on August 29, for a publicly counted 41 markets, and on August 31 the European Commission designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine on the strength of 159.1 million users OpenAI itself declared. International availability in every market where ChatGPT Ads runs is scheduled for September 23.
Against that backdrop, the small-business distribution play is the actual news. The Shopify app, developed by OpenAI and listed September 3, automatically installs a server pixel equivalent to a Conversions API integration; a merchant syncs the catalog and launches campaigns with conversion tracking already wired in. The HubSpot integration, in beta since mid-July, lets businesses create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads directly in HubSpot, with automatic UTM tagging that ties ad clicks to contact records. HubSpot says weekly active users of its ChatGPT connector, which it claims was the first CRM connector to the product in 2025, have grown 250%. The Unbound announcements this week sit inside the same strategy.
Brian Landsman, OpenAI’s vice president of global partnerships, framed the launch around the idea that adopting a new channel shouldn’t require a business to rebuild the way it works. The commercial scaffolding underscores the point: an AI Growth Bundle offering up to 65% off HubSpot Starter for a year, a buy-one-get-one on ChatGPT Business seats, and a $750 match on ChatGPT Ads spend for new accounts opened by September 30. New advertisers signing up directly at ads.openai.com get a $500 match after spending $500.
Sponsored Agents also arrives with the plumbing of a mature ad platform, not an experiment: an Event Quality Score graded 1 to 10 under Tools > Conversions, configurable 7-, 14-, or 30-day click windows and 0- or 1-day view windows, and five-way platform targeting across Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app, and iOS web.
The Shopify App Store listing carries a 4.0 rating from three reviews. That’s the honest measure of where this is: the infrastructure is finished, the distribution is priced to move, and the demand-generation question is no longer whether ChatGPT is an ad channel but whether it’s the one small operators default to first.
