On September 22, 2026, Google began emailing eligible US Shopify merchants to inform them that their stores had already been matched to Merchant Center and switched on for native checkout inside AI Mode and the Gemini app. The notification is unusual not for what it announces but for what it skips: the merchant’s consent.
“Your Shopify store was matched to your Merchant Center, enabling native checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini. To be eligible, your products must be published on your Shopify storefront and available in Merchant Center. Eligible products are automatically included,” the email reads, as reported by PPC Land. The broader rollout had quietly begun the previous Friday, September 18, with screenshots surfacing on X from merchants including Menachem Ani and Nic McDonough. Asked by Mike Ryan, Head of Ecommerce Insights, how the integration got wired up, Ani said there was “no action on our end.”
That’s the point. In March, participation in Google’s agentic checkout required adding a native_commerce feed attribute, confirming the payment service provider could accept a Google Pay token, and submitting an interest form. A PublicWWW scan on May 21 turned up just 26 sites with a detectable implementation. The manual on-ramp didn’t scale, so Google and Shopify replaced it with platform-level matching and reversed the default. Shopify’s documentation confirms direct checkout is now on by default for eligible stores; disabling it requires a trip into Sales channels > Agentic.
The scaffolding here’s the Universal Commerce Protocol, the open standard the two companies jointly announced on January 11, 2026. Google’s developer docs describe it as enabling “direct, instant purchases across AI surfaces” while keeping the merchant as Merchant of Record. The new Merchant Center UCP hub, in phased US rollout with Australia and Canada slated for next year, formalizes the plumbing and gives merchants knobs for cart routing and payment handling.
The catch is measurement. Checkout blocks, product bundles, custom pixels, and Google Analytics client-side tracking aren’t supported inside the direct checkout experience. Merchants auto-enrolled this month are selling through a channel their analytics stack can’t fully see, with no upsell flow and no post-purchase logic they built for their owned storefront.
This is the third AI-surface commerce move from Google in roughly two weeks, after it embedded a Flipkart buy button inside Gemini and extended loyalty and Customer Match into AI Mode. The pattern reads less like a product launch cycle than a reclassification. The checkout page used to be the merchant’s territory. In the AI Mode era it’s becoming a surface Google renders, and the merchant is informed by email after the fact.
