Kargo made Karlo generally available on October 1, dropping the price of entry on connected TV into a natural-language workflow that doesn’t require a media buyer, an agency retainer, or an enterprise-sized budget. The pitch is structural, not incremental: a channel that was effectively gated to brands with dedicated trading desks is now self-serve.
Founder and CEO Harry Kargman framed the move plainly. “This takes the power of Kargo and puts it in the hands of small business,” he said. Pressed on whether Karlo was a stripped-down tier, he insisted it isn’t “a watered-down version of what bigger advertisers have.” Small businesses, he told Sourcing Journal, face “the exact same problem as big advertisers. Their customers are spread across more places, but they have fewer people and fewer resources to reach them.”
The platform stitches together three Kargo pieces. Creative Science, grounded in cross-platform performance data, scores and iterates assets. Media Intelligence pairs premium audience data with contextual signals. Leonardo, Karlo’s creative agent, grades existing brand assets and adapts them inside the same loop that handles targeting and bidding, according to Casey Gordon, Kargo’s director of product, creative, speaking to Brand Innovators. Setup takes minutes. At a New York launch event, Kargo demoed Karlo building a holiday campaign for American Eagle Outfitters in minutes, from brief through audience targeting through inventory orchestration.
The early proof point is an Ad Council “Love, Your Mind” campaign Kargo says produced a 21% lift in ad recall and a 10% lift in aided awareness. Kargman conceded the obvious caveat: the platform is stronger on brand awareness than on performance marketing today, with Amazon and Walmart Connect data integrations still in progress to close that gap.
The context matters. Karlo arrives inside a tightening pattern of agentic buying tools pointed at resource-constrained teams: Demandbase’s Mojo agent for end-to-end B2B campaigns, and Google’s auto-migration of Search campaigns to AI Max, each absorbing a layer of human operator work that until recently defined the job of a media buyer.
The through-line is that the agency middle is being hollowed out at the small-business end first, where the economics of a human buyer never penciled anyway. CTV was the last channel where that gatekeeping held. Kargo is betting it won’t hold much longer.
