Profound, a two-year-old New York startup selling visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation on September 15, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The round arrived less than seven months after a $96 million Series C, with revenue reportedly tripling in the intervening six months. The pace is the story. Answer-engine optimization, a category name that’s roughly two years old, now has a fundable, fast-compounding incumbent whose customer list already includes more than a third of the Fortune 100, alongside Comcast, Walmart, The Estée Lauder Companies and Royal Bank of Canada.
That’s the top line. The structural read is that the world’s largest advertisers have decided AI search visibility is a distinct channel worth paying a growth-stage price to measure, and they’re doing it before the equivalent decision has filtered down to the five-to-thirty-person businesses that’ll eventually be affected most.
The mechanics are unfamiliar and worth stating plainly. An answer engine, in Profound’s own framing, “will use hundreds of thousands of sources to form its opinion of just one brand” before recommending it. There’s no ten-blue-links audit trail. There’s a synthesized paragraph, and either your business is inside it or it isn’t. TechPluto’s framing that “search is becoming more fragmented” understates the shift: fragmented implies multiple ranked lists. What’s actually happening is that the list has collapsed into a sentence, and the sentence has an author trained on material the brand mostly didn’t write.
Consumer behavior is already adapting. A Bazaarvoice survey of more than 3,600 shoppers, reported on September 15, found that when an AI tool presents multiple options, 65% of shoppers click the brand they already know, 24% click the tool’s top-labeled match, and just 11% pick the cheapest. Unfamiliar AI-recommended products face a further filter: 76% of shoppers say they want to see customer photos or videos before buying. Brand recognition, earned mentions and authentic third-party content aren’t soft assets in this channel. They’re the ranking signal.
Profound is packaging that thesis into product surface area quickly, with an AI Marketer agent, a Context Manager layer and an Ads Studio feature already announced. The Sequoia and Kleiner check sizes the opportunity accordingly.
For everyone below the Fortune 100 tier, the durable question is whether their business appears in AI answers at all, and what to do about it. That work is already underway in adjacent coverage: AI tools are now the third-biggest way consumers find local businesses, and Google’s per-site AI Search report is now live for every website. The instrumentation exists. The lag is behavioral.
A $1.8 billion valuation isn’t a prediction. It’s a receipt for a decision already made inside the enterprises whose ad budgets set the shape of every channel underneath them.
