Reddit Opens Max
Ads Globally as
Its ChatGPT Citation
Share Collapses

Reddit rolled its AI-powered Max campaigns out to every advertiser the same fortnight Promptwatch tracked an 86.4% drop in Reddit's ChatGPT Search citation share, forcing small-team marketers to reassess a channel they'd been counting on for organic AI visibility.

On Sept. 3, Reddit opened its AI-powered Max campaigns to every advertiser globally, through the ad interface, the Reddit API, and a Smartly integration. Five days later, Promptwatch’s data showed Reddit’s share of citations inside ChatGPT Search had collapsed by more than 86%. The two events aren’t causally related. They’re strategically inseparable.

Max ran in beta since January with selected advertisers, who averaged 17% lower costs per acquisition and more than 27% additional conversions compared with regular campaigns. Those are strong beta numbers, and Reddit’s paid business hasn’t been shy about it. Ad revenue hit $664 million in Q1 2026, up 74% year over year, then $762 million in Q2, up 64%.

The organic side is a different story. Between July 18 and Aug. 7, Reddit averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations, the top-cited domain on the platform. From Aug. 14 through Aug. 17, that average fell to 0.52%, a relative decline of 86.4%. Promptwatch called the size of the drop provisional and said it couldn’t yet rule out a data-collection issue. Petra Labs’ independent analysis put the decline at around 80%, and found YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok also falling.

Search Engine Journal noted a plausible mechanism. On Aug. 8, site:-scoped searches jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of ChatGPT’s fanout queries, six days before Reddit’s sharpest decline. Promptwatch co-founder Klaas Foppen framed the behavioral shift: ChatGPT “is no longer just searching the open web and seeing what comes back; it is deliberately going to specific sites to pull information from them.”

There’s precedent for reading this carefully. In September 2025, a similar Reddit citation collapse was eventually tied by one analyst to Google removing the num=100 search parameter, an upstream plumbing change nobody had connected to AI citations at the time. Causes here are rarely the ones that look obvious in the first week.

For a small-team owner who spent 2025 seeding Reddit threads to be discoverable inside ChatGPT, the practical read is uncomfortable. Organic AI visibility on Reddit is now unstable, and the paid Max product isn’t a like-for-like replacement, it’s a different budget line requiring its own attribution logic. Before shifting spend, audit whether the same source-selection risk is quietly reshaping your own domain’s citations in other AI engines. Our earlier coverage of how consumers find local and online businesses through AI tools and what Google’s AI search report now lets sites do is a starting point.

The uncomfortable structural fact: the platforms winning inside AI search are increasingly the ones AI engines choose to visit, not the ones users choose to reward.
