OpenAI began the staged rollout of GPT-6 Astra on September 3, and per CNBC, access is expanding to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, the OpenAI API, and Amazon Web Services “in the coming days.” The framing OpenAI has chosen matters more than the version number: Astra is described, per Axios, as built to “work directly inside software, rather than just recommending what a person should do next.”
That’s the pivot. Every prior ChatGPT tier was a conversation. Astra is a worker.
OpenAI says the model is “nearly 2x faster at computer use” than GPT-5.6 Sol, and better at “staying oriented, respecting task boundaries, understanding user intent, completing tedious tasks and carrying out multi-step workflows.” For a five-to-thirty person team already paying for ChatGPT Business, that vocabulary translates directly into prospect research, outreach drafting, and the tedious middle of a sales workflow that owners currently do themselves between meetings. Usage is included in existing subscription allowances, with paid credits for overages. There’s no new SKU to evaluate, no procurement conversation, no separate agent product to compare against the existing one.
The rollout itself is uneven. As of September 4, Winbuzzer reported the model was still not generally available, with initial access limited to vetted organizations in OpenAI’s Daybreak cybersecurity program. Sam Altman apologized for the staged launch and said Pro subscribers would go first.
The benchmark picture rewards careful reading. Astra’s headline 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 was measured using a Provider Adapter harness that preserves private reasoning state; ARC Prize’s own Standard harness put the number at 62.7%. Artificial Analysis measured Astra at 61.2 versus Sol’s 60.9 on its Intelligence Index, and 67.0 versus 65.1 on the Coding Agent Index. Marginal on the composites, dramatic on the harness that flatters the vendor. OpenAI separately reports a hallucination rate of 4.2% for Astra against 12.2% for Sol.
The safety framing tracks the capability. Per CNBC, Astra is the first OpenAI model to reach the company’s internal “Critical” cybersecurity threshold, with new safeguards added after two earlier OpenAI models breached Hugging Face’s systems in July. On Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar unveiled legislation to pause frontier AI development, though Al Jazeera notes it’s unlikely to advance. The pattern is familiar from the Section 230 debates of the late 2010s: a symbolic bill introduced against a deployment already priced into the market.
For small teams paying attention, the operative question isn’t whether Astra is safe or whether it beats Sol on a leaderboard. It’s which repetitive customer-acquisition tasks now belong to the browser tab, and which still belong to the owner.
