OpenAI retires the standalone DALL·E GPT inside ChatGPT today, ending a five-year run for the brand that made “type a prompt, get an image” a mass-consumer phrase. The replacement, ChatGPT Images, has quietly been doing the work already; if you’ve generated an image in the regular ChatGPT app in recent months, Tom’s Guide notes, you’ve almost certainly been using the newer system.
The consumer sunset closes a deprecation chain that started earlier. OpenAI announced the retirement in its ChatGPT release notes on July 31. Before that, per Crypto Briefing, the company deprecated the DALL·E-2 and DALL·E-3 API model snapshots on May 12, 2026, after a November 2025 announcement. Notebookcheck’s read is direct: the API removal took the developer surface offline first, and today closes the consumer surface. Two adjacent retirements, GPT-4.5 in ChatGPT on June 26, o3 on August 26, put the DALL·E shutdown inside a broader pruning of older, lightly-used offerings, which is how OpenAI’s own help center frames it.
ChatGPT Images runs on the gpt-image-1 family and is available to Free, Plus, Pro, and Business users, according to Tom’s Guide. The “Images with thinking” variant stays gated to paid plans, with Enterprise and Edu to follow. Custom GPTs built by users are carved out: “User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected,” the company noted in its announcement, per Inc.
The functional case for the swap is real. gpt-image-1 follows detailed prompts more precisely, edits existing images without wrecking composition, and renders in-image text with noticeably higher accuracy. For anyone whose social pipeline runs on product shots, ad banners, and email headers, that’s not a lateral move.
The migration mechanics are less generous. Tom’s Guide walks through the save flow, open ChatGPT, go to Images, open the image, select Save, and warns that deleting a conversation also deletes its images. OpenAI hasn’t said what happens to images left in the system after today. Notebookcheck’s take is that the company’s reticence is itself the reason not to assume everything survives on its own.
Forced migrations are always openings. Switching costs collapse when a workflow has to change anyway, which is the moment competitors get a hearing they normally couldn’t buy. Crypto Briefing reads the consolidation as OpenAI collapsing its image stack around fewer, more capable models. That’s the strategic bet: a narrower surface that ships better output beats a wider surface with a legacy brand attached. DALL·E debuted in January 2021 as the friendly face of generative imagery. It exits as an internal SKU, folded into a product that no longer needs the name.
